Welcome to the official Tuna Jackpot Website!Mark it on your calendars. The 11th annual Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot is slated for Nov. 4-7, with fishing days Nov. 5-6."We had a great week in Cabo with the third biggest tuna in the history of the event, a 244 pounder by Reel Rum, a record amount of money raised for charity, $27,000, and we had four great parties. The 10th annual tourney went on with few glitches (See director's notes in 2008 Review section) and many teams have said it may have been smaller than in past years, but it was the most fun," said Pat McDonell, director. "We don't plan too many changes, just a few refinements here and there. We will change two venues, namely the captains meeting and the rock and roll party." Indeed, It is likely the Costa Del Mar captain's meeting will be moved from the Puerto Pairiso mall to the Tesoro Hotel or the malecon in front of it, while the two weigh-ins and awards dinner will remain at the mall area, said McDonell. The Thursday Fiesta at Soloman's will be back by popular demand. (See schedule) "We plan to crankup the fun at the captains meeting at the Tesoro, which is the official Cabo hotel of the tourney," said McDonell. "It's a far cry from the old Plaza Las Glorias. It got rave reviews from people who stayed here this year, including me. Great staff, clean, new rooms, great breakfasts, views of the marina from every room. We want to bring one of the events to the hotel to show it off, andit will be far more convenient for us to stage it there. We'll have a live band play for three hours, tables and chairs to sit in around the pool before the meeting starts, and the check-in will be under several tents in the shade with a view of the marina and Land's End. It will be a greart event to kick off four days of partying and competition." One other venue change is the Rock and Roll Party Friday, sponsored by Reactor Watches. "Squid Roe is the new venue, and we'll have food, a free drink at the door, a live band and I promise it will be a great time to relax, sit (until dancing starts at 9:30 or so), eat and win some amazing drawing prizes. It will be a perfect party spot after two days of fishing," said McDonell. "I expect us to be well over 100 teams next year, and we'll be promoting the event on both sides of the border, overseas and back East as well. This year we had teams from six countries, including Ireland, France and Germany." The entry form is now updated as well as the rules. A Spanish version will be soon added to the preview section. "The dorado/wahoo optional rule will be changed to have the minimum for both days lowered to 30 pounds, as per a request by many teams. If no team catches a fish that big, the backup species is tuna," said McDonell. Stay tuned for any announcements on the event on the official website (www.loscabostunajackpot.com) or on the pages of Western Outdoor News or Western Outdoors Magazine. You can download the entry form from this website, or you can request one by e-mailing Pat McDonell at pat@wonews.com.
