Where do you start in planning your first-ever TUNA JACKPOT?

You've heard about it, and the Tuna jackpot sounds like a good time and excuse to take some time off and wet a line and maybe win some big money.

Well, it's time to book a charterboat, get your airline reservations, find a hotel and look for some teammates who want to party and fish hard in Cabo, or bring down your family for a vacation and combine it with a fun event.

You can enjoy the event at low-cost or high-end. It's your choice. Either way, it's great fun to be a part of the action and parties and have a shot at big money and another $150,000 in tackle and travel prizes.

The key component for serious competitors is a good boat. You can bring your own down, and it's worth it if you plan to stay and pre- and post-fish the event.

The most convenient way is to fly down, stay at a hotel or condo, charter a boat or pangero, and relax. Then again, you might be serious from the get-go.

According to McNear, event director, most anglers are looking for quality sportfishers with diesel speed of at least 18 knots, although a good local pangero would also suffice รณ if the weather cooperates.

"Obviously, the better the boat, the faster it is and the more in tune with catching yellowfin it is, the better your chances will be," said McNear. "Still, a small boat can certainly win the big bucks. We saw it the first year with Estrella Del Mar, the second year a team on the local charterboat nearly won the event before Flyhooker they had a breakdown and couldn't get to the weigh-in on time, and two years ago the 30-foot Griselda, a typical Cabo day charterboat, caught the biggest tuna, a 258 pounder." And last year, the Fish Tales Two took the biggest tuna, a 157.80 pounder, on a Cabo charterboat by a team from Colorado.
